Rescued Jewish Children

15 August 1943 (Sunday)

I am working again – now I am learning to sew. It‘s easy! I am learning Hebrew, I am happy. Nothing special in my personal life. I am surprised that the majority of the ghetto young people take part in different extracurricular activities, want to learn. This is great I am involved in four such activities. Of course, there are two sides of the coin. Like the young people in the ghetto. Some are full of enthusiasm, the Love for the Nation, look for the meaning of life and even deeper things, while the others have given up, given in to their desires and do not want anything else. This is very painful and disgusting. I am watching them like some kind of pathetic characters. It is really very low... Political life is very interesting. Yesterday somebody said that Hitler became ill and went to his residence, i.e. resigned. The newspapers did not reaffirm this. The atmosphere in the city is terrible. The Lithuanians are registered and sent to the front. Due to this reason tomorrow and the day after tomorrow nobody can enter or leave the ghetto. There is unrest in Marijampolė, Kybartai is on fire, somebody said. This is the beginning of the end. The spark of hope becomes brighter. I am sure that before the winter the game will be over. It is raining outside, grey, the sky is cloudy, unpleasant. In the evenings it is cold with the northern wind, I want to go to bed, sleep more. All the symptoms of winter! I feel the hunger again. We haven‘t felt it for the entire summer /.../.
