Dombrovskis (Dąmbrowski) Konstantinas

Dąbrowski Konstantyn and Dąbrowska Jelena

Konstantyn and Jelena Dąbrowski, a poor peasant couple with five children, lived in an isolated cottage near Vilna, where they eked out a meager living by cultivating a small plot of land. During the occupation, they saved the lives of a number of local Jews by offering them shelter in their home and looking after them without payment.
Seven members of the Shapiro and Bilits families from Pabrade were among those helped by Dąbrowski. They stayed at Dąbrowski until they found more permanent hiding places.
After their departure, the Dąbrowskis put up Uri Blocher, from the village of Mikailiškės near Vilna, for nine months, sharing their food with him. When, however, local peasants began suspecting that the Dąbrowskis were hiding Jews, Uri Blocher was forced to leave and continued wandering from place to place until the area was liberated. After the war, Uri Blocher immigrated to the United States. He never forgot the Dąbrowskis who had saved his life, and even after Jelena and Konstantin's death, Uri Blocher kept up contact with their children.
