VANDA MURMAITĖ-ČEPONIENĖ
During the German occupation, Vanda Murmaitė-Čeponienė together with her parents rescued the Ignalina shopkeeper Brumberg (name unknown) in Biečiūnai village (Ignalina district).
One autumn day, Izidorius Murma went to a bathhouse located further from the house and found a man hiding there whom he recognized as Brumberg, a shopkeeper from Ignalina. When the man asked for refuge, Izidorius was not indifferent, allowing the man to stay in the bathhouse, feeding him without asking for anything in return and at the risk of the lives of his family: his wife and his 5 daughters. The youngest daughters were told that there was a bear in the bathhouse and that they could not go there and tell anyone about it. Brumberg lived in the bathhouse from autumn to spring, and in early spring he was preparing to go to Švenčionėliai to collect the things he had left behind. Fearing for his safety, Izidorius Murma went to Švenčionėliai himself, but was unable to retrieve Bromberg’s belongings. After saying goodbye to the Murma family, Brumberg set off towards Švenčionėliai. Unfortunately, after some time, the Murmas heard the sad news – Brumberg was shot on the way.
In 2000, Vanda Murmaitė-Čeponienė was awarded the Life Saviour’s Cross.
